PandaDoc and Windward find themselves at the top of the list for teams around the world when it comes to document automation. PandaDoc serves businesses ranging in all sizes with a heavy focus on helping sales teams accelerate deals from proposal to close. Sales teams use PandaDoc to streamline deal workflow and improve performance, but it comes with a price of being a bit clunky.
For example, PandaDoc does not support text wrapping in fields. If you are required to put a field on a form and someone needs to type past the end of that field, the system isn’t capable of wrapping the text. What does this mean? Anything beyond the limited text field is lost with no way to retrieve it.
When it comes to creating templates, PandaDoc has a drag and drop interface that allows users to use pre-built building blocks, but if you’re looking to create templates from scratch with conditional formatting and business rules then this where PandaDoc’s editor falls short. Windward’s unfair advantage is the Designer – a template design tool which adds into Office and gives non-technical users the ability to generate templates using Word, Excel and PowerPoint with no layout or formatting restrictions. Windward takes it a step further and allows users to create business rules and conditional formatting that results in “smart document logic”.
Another limitation with PandaDoc is not being able to do a batch process. If you are required to send the same document to multiple recipients, you must add all 20 contacts, then manually send each one of them an individual form that requires a multi-step process. This is less than ideal and can quickly become error prone and very time consuming. With Windward, automated batch processing is available so you can output thousands of documents in record time using an engine that was designed for high-volume output.
Windward supports all the major data sources like SQL, XML, JSON and OData. If that’s not enough, Windward integrates seamlessly with Salesforce, HubSpot and Dynamics to name a few and has 150+ connectors for products and software from a variety of industries to suit all of your business needs. With PandaDoc, unless your data resides in a CRM or within PandaDoc’s contact area you might find yourself having to do a lot of manual data entry as the data sources mentioned above are not supported in the PandaDoc toolset.
Finally, there’s no way to identify required fields in the form. If a user is creating a document with multiple fields and they have a mix of required and not required fields, there is no way to differentiate between them. The users must click on each field and see if the box has been checked for it to be required which users claim is a nightmare of epic proportions.
While PandaDoc faces certain limitations that can be quickly and easily handled by Windward’s powerful Designer, they do offer real-time visibility for document tracking. They even go as far as notifying the sender when any action is taken on the document; someone opens, signs, annotates, forwards, etc.
