At heart, I’m a software developer and I like to create. That creation can be an idea, a product, a company, or something else. And Windward came about because then I had the time and I’d had this idea for a while. So, I sat down and created version 1 of the product.
The designer. We’ve constantly worked to make it easier and easier for people to do amazing things simply. And that has moved us further and further ahead of our competitors. And the key to this is we don’t sit still — we keep looking for additional functionality we can add to make it even more amazing.
Two things. First, how broad is our market. I constantly look at prospects we don’t provide a good solution for, to see if there’s additional work we should do to include that need. Second, I constantly talk to our customers to find what they find limiting or difficult. Some of our best features have come from customer complaints.
First off, I think AI is being oversold at present. It will have some targeted uses, but I don’t think it’s the giant game-changer many do. Second, I think the near future for document automation is making it fit seamlessly into business processes everywhere. No one should have to repetitively create any document.
We do a lot of virtual social events from lunch to jointly watching movies or playing games. The primary goal is to keep people talking to each other about non-work items so that they are then comfortable with work communication.
The two big metrics I watch are releasing new versions of our products and the number of quality leads we get in each month. If those two are on track, then everything else we play out quite well.
Not for me, but for all of us the key phrase is “tightly aligned, loosely coupled.”
The biggest failures were some of the people I hired. Everything comes down to the people. And the best advice – there’s no specific single piece of advice I would put as primary.
I’m presently reading “Lincoln” by David Herbert Donald. It’s very good. In my spare time, I read, watch movies, and am involved in politics (my mom & sister have been state legislators and my brother is running for City Council).
